Rugged quality is just so easy to pick out from the bunch, and the Trackabout Safari SV stood out like a sore thumb! From first glance, this premium Australian-made soft floor camper just screamed "reliable bushability!" Trackabout Campers are built by serious off-road contenders who know all too well the need for towering ground clearance for when the going gets tough. This camper is capable of hauling a serious load throughout some of our country's best and worst tracks, or maybe even cutting its own. Even at a standstill, it projects a rugged, go-anywhere presence.

The Adams Family

Since acquiring Trackabout in early 2012, the Adams family out of Brisbane has invested heavily in refining both design and build quality, and the results speak for themselves. The Adams boys are well known for their character and enthusiastic approach, leading a convoy of campers head-on while confidently carving a path through challenging terrain.

The Safari SV Extenda is a purpose-built off-road camper engineered to follow your tow vehicle just about anywhere. We put the Trackabout through a demanding off-road test, and the Safari SV handled harsh conditions with confidence and ease. It is equipped with the impressive Vehicle Components dual-shock suspension system, which delivers a composed, stable ride across rutted and uneven terrain. It will ride above obstacles with an impressive 610mm of clearance at its lowest point, keeping the chassis high and dry to avoid damage.

Military Demeanour

The Trackabout has an almost military demeanour riding on large 16-inch wheels and supported by 12-inch electric brakes, yet despite its heavy-duty credentials, it remains manageable in weight, tipping the scales at 990kg tare without the optional folding boat rack. The construction is particularly impressive, with a fully galvanised chassis, a strong drawbar, plus the height is maximised with 50x50mm mounting blocks for improved clearance.

Measuring 5.4m in length, 1.82m in width and 1.75m in height, this is a substantial camper. Its chassis is constructed from fully galvanised 50x50x5mm steel, reinforced with three 100x50x5mm drawbar sections. The main tub is zinc-annealed and powder-coated to maximise corrosion resistance. Standard inclusions such as an OzHitch coupling and a rated rear recovery point further reinforce its off-road credentials.

Innovation

From an innovation standpoint, the Safari SV Extenda showcases experience in thoughtful Australian design and engineering, with clever features that maximise accessibility and usability.

A standout feature is the kitchen, which can be accessed without deploying the camper. It offers generous storage and a level of finish that wouldn’t look out of place in a modern home kitchen, and yet it is conveniently protected in the body of the camper whilst travelling. Features include marbled laminate benchtops, a Smev two-burner stove (with an optional three-burner upgrade), an EvaKool 60L 12/240V fridge, stainless steel sink, and well-organised storage for cookware and pantry items. The entire kitchen slides neatly into the tailgate area, allowing roadside access for that meal or cuppa on the road. It’s supported by dual 85L water tanks that are well shrouded, mounted and protected, and twin 4.5kg gas bottle provisions (bottles not included).

Feel The Power

The Safari SV also distinguished itself by including solar capability as standard. A set of 60W Bosch fold-out solar panels connects to a 30A regulator and Marinetek multi-stage charger, ensuring the battery system remains topped up. The panels store conveniently in a dedicated drawer. While travelling, charging is supplemented via an Anderson plug while travelling. The dual battery setup includes two 105Ah AGM units housed behind a large drawbar-mounted toolbox, which also contains the electrical control hub, including a fuse box and Stecca battery management system with digital monitoring.

Lighting is well catered for with extensive LED coverage, and the inclusion of remote-controlled dimmable switches adds a practical touch. There are multiple internal and external 12V outlets, along with USB charging points.

Hot water is supplied by a Truma gas system, feeding both the kitchen sink and an external shower. A detachable shower is included as standard, while the ensuite tent remains an optional extra depending on user preference.

Large Toolbox & Luggage Rack

At the front, a large toolbox provides ample storage, topped by a pivoting luggage rack rated to carry items such as a tinnie or kayaks, plus all the gear for remote exploration.

Setup is quick and straightforward, taking around five minutes for the basic overnight configuration. The full setup, including annex and tropical roof, takes approximately 20 minutes at a relaxed pace.

Internal Space & Comfort

Once assembled, the camper offers a spacious and comfortable environment. The queen-size innerspring mattress is easily accessed via the walk-up entry. While the increased ride height means a slightly higher first step, access remains manageable even for those less mobile. The elevated tub design also allows for four large storage drawers beneath the bed, accessible from the internal walkway.

The amount of headroom is exceptional, creating an airy interior that remains comfortable even in hot conditions. The addition of a domed safari roof creates a dual-layer ventilation system that helps regulate temperature year-round. Construction materials include Wax Converters Dynaproofed 12oz canvas for the walls and 15oz for the roof, while the tropical roof uses a lighter 8oz canvas.

Premium Quality, Fully Australian Made Off-Road Camper

Overall, the Safari SV Extenda reflects a level of practical design thinking that is likely to keep it in demand for years to come. I love supporting such premium quality, fully Australian-made off-road campers that combine durability, innovation and liveability. This ripper camper is well-suited to both short and long sojourns, including extended remote travel. It is jam-packed with features, standard inclusions, accessories and sensible options to become your trusted travel companion through thick and thin.

This is a camper I’d be comfortable living out of for extended periods in remote areas. It's a genuine, strong and accommodating off-road tourer that I’d happily own.
