Track TVan Murranji MK5 Review
Bear's Best Camper Reviews
The Murranji - a waterhole, a region, a track - a legend. Although only 240 kilometers long, of all the hard stock routes in Australia the Murranji Track gained one of the fiercest reputations. Quote - School of History
The Murranji Track is an infamous stock route in the Northern Territory. It attracted descriptions as the "Ghost Road of the Drovers" and the "Death Track".
The Track Tvan is one of the toughest, most functional, practical and appealing off-road dedicated camper trailers in Australia, with a strong reputation as big as our great country! Hence, when they name their premium model the "Murranji", it just has to be something very special. As the competition heats up and starts snapping at its heels, the Track Tvan Murranji MK5 sprints ahead, loaded to take the pack head on!
The Tvan is one of the most popular tourers ever produced. Constant innovation and improvement has ensured that the much-loved unit will stay a favorite for many years to come. This is the 4th Generation of the tough TVan, an incredibly practical, compact and user-friendly camper built to extremely high engineering standards to ensure your investment guarantees excellent retainment value in years to come. The Murranji is the flagship of the Tvan range and its packaging has been improved yet again with a host of new optional equipment combining with the impressive standard features.
Taming the Rough and Tumble
Track Trailer developed the MC2 independent suspension many years ago in conjunction with the Australian Military and it has stood the test of time and endurance over some of the roughest ground not only in Australia, but in its travels throughout the world. MC2 Suspension stands for Mobility Category 2, the highest off-road rating achievable for a non-powered vehicle. The suspension rating can be varied for the application and as our demonstration unit was loaded with a host of all options, in fact for this Murranji, Track upgraded the suspension from the standard 1.5 tonne to 1.8 tonne.
Unlike many competitors TRACK will also customize the wheels and tyres to match the towing vehicle (where possible). The hot-dipped galvanised chassis is built tough, as is the body which is constructed in house of twin aluminium skins with a riveted sandwich panel construction.
The A-frame of the Tvan
Who could possibly fault the solid overall construction of the Tvan. It has a popular D035 off-road coupling out front of the A-frame drawbar featuring plenty of reversing clearance. There’s a hand brake for the upgraded 12” electric brakes, and 2 x 4 kg gas bottles covered by rip-stop vinyl. Should you be house proud you could easily repaint the removable alloy stone guards to keep up the appealing aesthetics. There’s a pair of dirty storage containers and the spare wheel sits on the roof with easy access. It just occurred to me that the spare also serves as overhead protection from whipping saplings, particularly with the Perspex skylights behind. Both have flyscreen and awnings, plus they open for flow through ventilation.
Effortless Camping No Matter the Terrain
The Tvan is built for serious travelers both on the bitumen, the corrugations, mud, slush, red dust and climbing almost impossible terrain. Any half serious wanderer will tell you that whilst it’s important to get to your destination more than half the fun is getting there. No-one wants to be bothered with long exhausting set-ups at the end of a big day on the road and that’s another point where the Tvan excels – you can set up the entire trailer for an overnighter in just 60 seconds!
The tent is stowed away in the rear hatch of the van keeping the full Queen bed clean and dry. For a quick overnighter you can simply access the bed by unlocking a few over centre catches and opening the top hinged hatch assisted and kept secure by well weighted gas struts.
The owner might then choose to shut the hatch after themselves and go straight to bed, or to install one of the two optional rear door covers. The rear insect screen option is ideal for tropical weather as it’s manufactured from sand fly proof mesh and allows maximum air flow. Yet we chose to set up the rear tent and annexe which erects in a jiffy.
The premium tent is made from Coolabah poly/cotton 8 oz super fine weave “Japara” canvass with midge mesh and YKK zips and a new tropical roof is standard on the Murranji. It is secluded and cozy when closed, and light and airy from the large windows and doors when unzipped. I really liked the new “breakfast bar”, a simple shelf that tensions the end wall and ensures full head height right to the edges. There’s even a zip-on ensuite tent included. Check out the new and very ingenious plug-in flick mixer fitting which adjusts the shower temperature.
As usual the full length awning takes the longest to assemble, probably around 15 minutes extra. It’s worth it in the heat or inclement weather but I wouldn’t bother for a simple overnight stop on a long journey. There’s something really comforting about sleeping with a solid roof overhead particularly in tropical downpours or at the opposite extreme snow. For added comfort there’s a pair of three-speed fans, a tonne of internal storage and optional sliding side windows for added ventilation.
The drop-down floor and rear-opening hatch sets the Tvan apart and makes for a very flexible camping setup, whether you want to deploy the tent or not. With a little practice you’ll do it easily in four or five minutes. The Murranji package includes the full length annexe and zip-on ensuite as standard.
Reliable Power Wherever the Road Takes You
The Tvan Murranji’s state of the art power systems utilise a fully comprehensive automotive style loom designed to fully integrate all the electrical options into one neat package. Up top is a 60 watt solar panel which is continually charging through an optional Redarc DC-DC controller to the single 105 AMP battery. There’s a separate mounting cavity for an optional second battery if desired.
The all-encompassing electrical package also includes a master isolation switch, switch panel with integrated fusing and circuit breakers for lights, stereo water pump and fans; battery monitor or volt meter, 240V outlets with safety switching, a dedicated front 240V plug and up to 3 internal 240V plugs for built in appliances, 2x USB chargers, Merit plug and cigarette style socket, water tank gauge for both tanks, stereo options including USB inputs for MP3 players and Bluetooth, Projecta 15A or 25A charger with the 2nd battery option and an optional Projecta 150W or 300W pure seine wave inverter.
Fresh Water on Demand Wherever You Go
Our MK5 Murranji was fitted with a 108 litre rear mounted water tank plus 70 litre front tank with quick fill. All the plumbing is completely shrouded from harm. I loved the extra pressurized tap fitting to the rear kerb side for serving freshwater on demand without opening the kitchen. A “draw from creek” pump option is also available. When it comes time to clean up, Track have developed their own diesel/240 volt hot water system assembled as a solid state kit which fits straight into the jerry can cavity on the driver’s side as an option.
10 Things You Need To Know About the Tvan MK5 Murranji
1. It's strong, functional, and stylish.
The Tvan Body is built from a broad array of fit for purpose materials which are all custom designed and 3D modelled. The Mark 4 construction has been upgraded utilising more light and strong alloy panels and the lower body is power coated galvanised sheet metal. Track combine an array of different materials to provide a light, strong, functional, durable and stylish body which the Tvan has been famous for since its first release.
2. You can choose from two types of kitchens.
The Classic Kitchen which is standard on the Tvan Yulara, Tanami and Canning. This slide out kitchen features stainless steel workbench, twin burners and BBQ plate, sturdy design – no support legs needed, 65 litre pantry – accessible from both sides, sink, electric water pump, new carcass design with more weight saving aluminium, re-designed windshields for better protection, new sink and cutlery tray to deliver more storage, new flick mixer tap.
The Murranji as displayed featured a ripper new, and 30% larger Premium Slide Out Kitchen, and I loved the fact it has twice the bench space. There’s a beautifully formed stainless-steel bench top for a premium feel, powder coated, predominantly aluminium body incorporating many drawers for storage of all your kitchen needs.
This terrific new kitchen workspace combines a Thetford three burner cooktop with folding glass lid with a stainless-steel sink with hot/cold mixer plus a drain board and handy utensils/cutlery drawer. It also features single handed opening/closing with Track Trailer’s own design of ball bearing runners and slides. The new integrated windshields are quite innovative and easily pop up into position. There’s even a convenient bottle opener – a very welcome touch in my book!
3. Set up is quick!
The Tvan Camper Trailer is amongst, if not the quickest of the all camper trailers in the market to setup and pack up.
4. The Tvan tent has major benefits of its own.
-
No canvas ever packs on to the bed. This mean no dirt or water or dust on the mattress and the bed can always remain made.
-
You can choose if you want to set up the full tent or just do the 30 second setup with the rear canvas screen.
-
Packing the van is a breeze because you don’t have to partially or fully setup the camper trailer to access gear in or around the cabin area.
5. The Track Tvan is a multi-award winning camper trailer.
The Track TVan has been well awarded with "Camper trailer of the Millenium 2000" and "Off-road Camper of the Year for three years.
