One of the foundations of the Mountain Trail range has been the popular EDX hard floor, but the Mountain Trail design team typically can’t rest on its laurels and has produced the latest EDX V2, now with an optional swing-away kitchen.

Cheap forward fold campers have taken the camper market by storm; however, smart tourers and serious off-road campers recognise the benefits of a premium hard floor alternative – including me! Plus, the solid internal floor makes a far more inviting living space, set a step above the dirt, mud, sand and creepy crawlies.

The last thing you want at the end of a long road is the frustration of complex set-ups, so Mountain Trail RV have gone to enormous strains to simplify our lives with push-button fold-over actuation that sets up and knocks down in a jiffy. It would take me longer to set up a swag than to set up this very complete campsite.

The original EDX commenced in 2012 and has enjoyed a very successful 7-year lifespan, only to be topped by the latest updates in the V2, where Mountain Trail has taken every opportunity to produce a premium camper at the lowest towing weight. You can be assured of long-term satisfaction with locally manufactured or accessed components for easy repair. It is one of the few campers in which all body parts are replaceable in the event of an unfortunate accident.

Rugged Son Of A Gun

Don’t let its great looks and easy living attitude fool you, the EDX V2 is one rugged son of a gun that will be your trusted mate through the rough stuff. The Mountain Trail independent trailing arm suspension with coil springs, dual shock absorbers, and replaceable stub axles has been thoroughly proven over the years in some of the toughest off- and on-road conditions.

The EDX V2 is now slightly larger, offering greater volume while still maintaining easily towable dimensions. At 1900mm wide, its wheel base tracks within those of most RVs,  and it’s a relatively compact 5130mm long and a very handy 1530 mm high, including the well-engineered boat loader (optional) loading racks that will carry your tinny, kayaks or other toys and deliver them safely to ground with an easy fold-over mechanism.

The magic is in the strength and the vast array of features, while still retaining a very low tare weight of 1360kg. You have plenty of payload with an ATM of 2000kg and an unloaded ball weight of 130kg. It combines a heavy-duty hot-dipped galvanised chassis and drawbar with an aluminium, zinc-annealed, and stainless body, utilising 3D CAD-engineered automotive construction finished with oven-baked enamel paint.

From the ground up, the EDX V2 has terrific ground clearance, with the spare wheel mounted high in the chassis. You will be pleased with the rugged construction under the trailer, including aluminium shrouding/bash plates, protecting the 125 ltr food-grade plastic water tank with no exposed plumbing or electrical components to smash.

It is a true off-roader with 12-inch electric off-road brakes, Vehicle Components DO35, a 3500 kg off-road tow hitch with hand-brake, upsized 17″ x 8″ steel wheels with 265/70/17 all-terrain tyres, a heavy-duty jockey wheel and 2 heavy-duty stabiliser legs, front and rear mud flaps, and 2 engineered recovery points.

Auto Opening

To erect the camper, you fold back the roof rack, undo the latches, press the automatic button, and it pops open in a jiffy. There are only two internal support posts to slide in, and she’s ready for an overnighter!

You won’t find a better canvas with locally manufactured Wax Converters 12-ounce Dyna-proofed canvas with an instant insulation cover for added protection, plus leather wraps around the hinge points on the frame. You can open the doorways on either side, plus the large rear panel also becomes a picture window and awning. The entire unit is protected with midge-proof flyscreens and zips. The dimensions of the V2 now allow room for a camp stretcher or bunks to be assembled east-west across the internals, allowing plenty of floor space for the whole family on the attractive commercial-grade vinyl floor.

Optimised Interior

“The interior of the EDX V2 has been designed to optimise every inch of the internal volume”, says Mountain Trail. There’s effortless access up to the Queen-size inner spring mattress, and there are reading lights on either side of the bedhead. The electrical control box has dual 240-volt power points, USB and AUX sockets, an outlet for the diesel heating, and a large slide-out stainless steel clothing drawer with dividers at the foot of the bed. The drawer can be accessed from outside when packed up for easy loading. The combination of touch, strip, cabinet, and drawer lighting enhances the ambience and usability, making the EDX V2 a very cosy and inviting little home away from home. The EDX V2 kit includes a zip-on ensuite complete with hot and cold water and a mesh floor for added ease.

Outside Living

Every inch of the EDX V2 exudes the quality we have come to expect from Mountain Trail. Out front, the strong A-frame drawbar features the DO35 hitch, handbrake, a premium ARK jockey wheel, standard trailer wiring including an Anderson plug, and now a strong welded platform that is strong enough for a motorbike, outboard motor, and generator, or just for use as a handy step.

There’s a large partitioned toolbox with abrasion-resistant coatings in front of the main tub, which includes jerry can and gas bottle storage, and has a pair of heavy-duty mud flaps as primary protection for the trailer below.

The kerb side of the trailer is exceptionally liveable, especially when you see how easily the touring awning assembles. Thank God somebody finally made an easy awning, I say; it seriously only takes a few brief minutes – and it’s really easy! A mesh-style annexe floor is included in the kit.

Feel The Quality

I have often said that a great way to examine quality is to close your eyes and feel the product. This is a must with the EDX V2. Open some doors, slide the fridge, open the kitchen and zip some awnings – you’ll feel the difference!

Up front is a ripper fridge compartment capable of housing the largest coolers, this one a whopping 95 litres. Such compartments are also carpeted and feature automatic lighting and ample ventilation. Right next to the fridge is a huge twin-drawer pantry, and then an MTC-designed stainless steel slide-out kitchen with a 3-burner stove, sink with a glass lid, under-sink storage, 2 drawers, and an ample food preparation bench. Mountain Trail now offers a smart swing-away-style kitchen as an option, which many will select for its greater ergonomics.

Feel The Power

The EDX V2 features a Redarc 30-amp Battery Management System (BMS) as standard, with two 105 Amp AGM batteries conveniently housed under the Queen bed. This system is capable of charging the camper whilst driving from the towing vehicle, via solar power whilst stationary, and via 240V if mains power is accessible. The battery management system also provides information such as battery percentage, battery temperature, time to go, and charging rates.

The entire electrical system is controlled by a 6-way control panel, complete with individual fuses. It is assembled with fully sheathed plug-and-play wiring that eliminates installation errors and provides absolute protection. The camper includes 240V power points, a 2000-watt pure-sine wave inverter, ample USB & AUX 12V outlets, LED lights throughout, a water pump and dual actuators. As a terrific bonus, the whole trailer tub is pressurised for maximised protection on wet and dusty roads.

The very complete electrical system is accompanied by a comprehensive water system, including a shrouded 125 litre storage tank, water level indicator, 12 V pump, mains pressure regulator, the diesel-powered hot water system, and a convenient 3-way water valve to draw from an external water source.

You can pack all of that essential equipment, plus the toys in the EDC V2 with its three large containers on the driver’s side, the gigantic slide-out drawer under the bed, the pantry and tool box, plus a convenient full-width container up in front.
