Lumberjack Eildon Review
I just can’t stop that old Monty Python tune rumbling around in my head again, and again singing “I’m a lumberjack and I’m OK” while I “always look on the bright side of life with Lumberjack Campers!” But now it’s time for something completely different from the world of forward fold camper trailers. The all-new Lumberjack Eildon with its bunk-style accommodation and automatic opening may be your holy grail!
Let’s face it; there is a virtual plethora of forward fold campers on the market. Many originate from the same beginnings and are tricked up with various finishing accessories, paint jobs and packaging, all competing in a similar space. But the Lumberjack Eildon is a camper with a defined difference; it has a very deep tub with a traditional forward fold Queen bed up front, however, the back folds out to reveal an innovative bunk area that just may be the mobile accommodation answer for your flying circus.
You can leave the traditional U-shaped dinette set up if you only have requirements for one extra bed, or alternatively, drop the collapsible table into position as an infill and rearrange the cushions as a further double. Hence, the Eildon can sleep five adults if required without rear slides or extenders. With a fully erected footprint of (L) 5.5m x (W) 4.4m,, the Eildon has the sleeping capability and the protected area to keep the clan warm, comfortable, shaded and dry in all conditions.
Lumberjack Eildon Camper Trailer - From The Ground Up
When closed for transport, the Lumberjack Eildon measures 5.4m long x 2.1m wide x 1.9m high. It is slightly taller than most forward-folding campers because the main tub has been deepened for extra capacity and to fit the folding frame and bunk components.
The unit rides on 16" rims and all-terrain tyres, with optional orange highlights matching the decals and hammertone black paint. Lumberjack Campers manufactures its own independent trailing arm suspension that incorporates 12" electric brakes with breakaway and a mechanical handbrake. Its construction is very solid and cushioned by twin shock absorbers on either side, plus coil springs. The unit rides very well both on and off-road.
The Eildon has an ATM of 2400kg, tare weight of 1660kg out of the factory dry and without extras, and unloaded ball weight of 220kg. So watch how you load it, keeping your vehicle's limits in mind.
The Eildon construction utilises a strong chassis with 100 x 50 x 4mm galvanised A-frame drawbar headed up by a 3-tonne polyblock style off-road towing coupling. There's a strong and functional ARK jockey wheel and water tap from the twin 120 and 65 litre water tanks. These tanks are set high into the chassis and well-shielded from danger with alloy bash plates. The undersides feature protected plumbing and wiring. On top of the drawbar is a broad stone shield with replaceable mesh, a large toolbox, twin 9kg gas cylinders and dual Jerry can retainers.
As we step around the back, we find twin spare wheels assisting in balancing some weistabilizersere’s large LED trailer lighting, a gas outlet, two of the four swing-down stabilizers, strong recovery points, and a relief angle that seems quite reasonable as she never dragged her bum over the moguls.
The Eildon looks quite a treat on the road with those attractive decals, bright stainless steel hinges and compression latches, and even a pair of plastic wheel arch trims. Up top, we find a strong 1.5mm thick aluminium checker plate roof, but there aren’t any real tie-down points should you wish to carry some kayaks or similar; however, a boat loader or luggage rack could be fitted as an option.
Externally, the camper has five storage compartments, including handy pole storage. There's a full-width "boot" up in front with sliding trays either side for fridges/generators/barbecue/storage box, etc. One side is pre-wired for a fridge—the battery compartment on the driver's side houses 2 x deep cycle batteries. A further compartment at the rear contains the isolator switch.
Auto Erect Tent
Once you have decided on your perfect campsite, levelled and stabilised the trailer, simply turn on the battery isolator and grab the portable remote for the automatic opening device that makes life much simpler and less strenuous. Much of the tent pops into place immediately; however, some added poles need adjusting in the rear for the bunk area, and every bow needs adjustment and tensioning with spreader bars. To be honest, there is a bit of effort involved, but you will develop your own system with practice. The tent is quite high, which offers a spacious feel, but make sure you attach the outer awning roof before you fully lift it, or carry a ladder – it’s a long way up!
I was pleased to find that Lumberjack uses a high-quality 14oz canvas on the tent and awning, including a tropical roof that pops up automatically as you fold the tent out. Even the zips and midge mesh screens seemed high quality, and the workmanship included double stitching on all joins. The extensive array of windows feature both inner and outer awnings, and Lumberjack has also included a cafe-style opening on the kerb side, increasing the social and living function. The standard Eildon package comes with a full length 4.9 x 2.4 metre annexe including quick release action poles, detachable wall enclosures, and a PVC floor.
What's Inside?
As you step into the Eildon up the folding staircase you find the Queen bed immediately to the left with its own privacy screens. It really is very inviting and comfortable however there’s quite a step up due to the height of the deep tub. Although it does allow for three handy drawers on the open face.
On the right-hand side,, the main control panel features individually fused lighting and electrical switches, a volt meter, auto tent control, and water tank gauge, plus the CD/USB/Bluetooth sound system with dual internal speakers.
The deep tub incorporates windows on both sides of the U-shaped dinette, adding a nice touch mainly for ventilation rather than light. The seats boast well-padded vinyl cushions with storage underneath and a collapsible table. Everything's finished in attractive timber laminate with a floating floor.
The top bunk is a king single, offering ample space for a comfortable night's sleep, even for larger folks. The convertible dinette converts to a double bed. Inside, there are 7 internal lights, including LED strips and a step light, plus 2 external LED lights. You'll find 5 x 12V outlets, including a dedicated fridge socket, to power up your gear, like the optional TV that tucks away under the seats.
Outdoor Kitchen and Cooking
Lumberjack's external kitchen is a highly efficient unit. The stainless steel kitchen slides out smoothly and locks into place with adjustable legs. It features a fold-back tray above the sink, creating extra bench space alongside the sink's draining board, plus a pull-out extension—you can never have too much bench space! The 4-burner stove with a wok burner and wind guards can cater for the whole production cast. They have included two sliding utensil drawers and any recessed compartments; however, there is no real pantry.
Lumberjack backs the Eildon with a 5-year structural warranty. You can get info on the Eildon through Lumberjack's main office and showroom in Geelong, Vic, or at outlets in Slacks Creek, Qld, and Cameron Caravans in Adelaide.
The Eildon is an innovative camper trailer with a layout appealing to many travellers, especially those with bigger families. It's great to see competition sparking new ideas in this popular segment of the Aussie camping scene.
