Looks Like Thunder

I am pleased to have had the good fortune of putting many models of Goldstream RV campers and caravans through their paces over thousands of kilometers of rugged terrain, and virtually every demanding Australian climatic extreme. Although my respect for the brand has been forged through countless experiences, one tale stands out as a testament to Goldstream's superiority.

Once, during an unseasonal heatwave at remote Nundooka Station (around 100km as the crow flies north of Broken Hill), our team endured four sweltering days of 45-degree temperatures. We had a Goldstream Thunder in tow, alongside another similar-style camper from a large, rival manufacturer.

The Goldstream was a sanctuary on a balmy night when a massive locust plague descended upon us. While our crew retreated to the spacious, air-conditioned comfort of the Thunder, one unfortunate soul was left to face the locust invasion in the opposing camper. The following day, the poor chap emerged from his camper covered in green and yellow slime, with locust legs and wings protruding from his ears, and hair slicked with insect frames and guts.

It was a grim reminder of the importance of a well-sealed camper. The Goldstream Thunder withstood the locust onslaught, keeping its occupants comfortable, secure, and without infiltration from the horde. This experience was a resounding endorsement of Goldstream's commitment to quality and craftsmanship.

My travels have allowed me to meet many fellow Goldstream owners, each with their own unique stories. One memorable encounter was meeting with an accountant from Adelaide in Coober Pedy. This fella serviced outback properties from South Australia to Darwin, and on this occasion had brought his family along for the adventure. His Goldstream camper had become a trusted companion on his regular journeys to visit clients in the outback.

As a fan of pop-up campers, I've encountered my fair share of skeptics. But I've learned to smile and enjoy the comforts of my Goldstream while they're still struggling to set up their canvas camper monstrosities.

On and off-road abilities mean you will spend maximum time enjoying the Thunder.

Trusted Companion On and Off-Road

The Goldstream Thunder proved a reliable and comfortable travel companion, effortlessly towed by my diesel Land Rover Discovery. With its low windage and 1672kg tare weight, maneuvering was a breeze. On previous extended adventures with similar vans, I had the team at Goldstream fit some roof racks, allowing me to easily carry a 3.5 metre "roof-topper" aluminium boat.

On this occasion, our demonstration unit came equipped with the optional "Off-Road" package, which included a range of upgrades that made it capable of handling challenging terrain. The Thunder's specifications are impressive: a GTM of 2000kg, ATM of 2102kg, and a robust suspension system that easily handled even the toughest climbs and undulations.

Its 265/75R16 tyres and 16" Primal Alloy Wheels provided a smooth ride, while the 12" electric brakes efficiently brought it to a stop. At 2130mm wide, the Thunder may be a little broader than some purists prefer, but I'm happy to trade a bit of width for the extra internal space and comfort it provides. With an overall length of 6100mm, it's still remarkably manageable, even when fully loaded with water, gear, and provisions.

Quality From the Foundations Up

The Goldstream Thunder boasts a robust galvanized chassis with 150mm x 50mm main rails and a premium Vehicle Components DO35 MK2 off-road coupling. The A-frame drawbar features a removable jockey wheel, Anderson Plug, handbrake, and twin 9kg gas bottles, all protected by a replaceable mesh stone guard. Underneath, the poly water tanks are cleverly divided to distribute the load and are shielded by checker plate aluminum for added protection. The wiring and plumbing are neatly tucked within the chassis, and wind-down stabilizers provide added stability on each corner.

The camper's main body is constructed from strong, insulated composite materials, with checker plate alloy trims acting as stone guards up front and on the sides. A spacious boot storage compartment across the front is a welcome feature, while the ABS body molding at the rear adds a touch of style. The adjustable bumper bar features twin jerry can holders and a spare wheel, providing added protection.

The cooking facilities feature slide-out kitchen storage and stainless steel cabinets plus a BBQ

Time to Go Camping

Setting up the Thunder is a breeze, taking just seven minutes to establish a comfortable overnighter, including winding out the stabilisers. After two minutes, the Fiamma F45's awning is deployed and the external kitchen is ready for action. The Thunder's stainless-steel kitchen is a standout feature. Complete with a Sovereign BBQ, two-burner gas cooktop, large, pressurized sink, and hot water courtesy of the Truma HWS, it's a culinary delight. However, as a personal preference, I've always been drawn to Goldstream's Storm or Wing Series, which feature internal cooking facilities and a slide-out BBQ – but that's just me being picky!

The Thunder features huge internal storage space, a host of internal standard features, and the lounge is extra deep

Internal Bliss

As we enter the Thunder, the electrical control unit immediately catches our attention, featuring the intuitive BM Pro control unit, light switches, and sound system. With the beds fully extended, the interior transforms into a spacious oasis, measuring 6850 x 2130mm – perfect for relaxing or entertaining.

The Goldstream Thunder caravan accommodates up to five adults. It has a comfortable dinette, a large east/west double bed, and a separate Queen bed to the rear. Each bed features canvas surrounds, large windows with fly screens, internal awnings, and privacy curtains. The full-width lounge is an added bonus, providing ample space for relaxation.

The interior area comfortably seats five adults with a long list of interior features and upholstered return seat backing

With the cooking facilities located outside, the interior is free to boast an impressive array of storage options, including vast cabinetry, large drawers, pantry storage, and plenty of room for clothing. The 93-litre fridge/freezer and recessed microwave are convenient additions. Aesthetically, the Thunder impresses with its attractive combination of laminates, cabinets, and hard-wearing floor. I love the bench space with even more internal cupboard storage and kitchen storage area beneath. Considering no overhead cabinets are available, you will be impressed with the exceptional internal storage. The camper's livability is further enhanced by its terrific head height, magnificent 360-degree views, and excellent canvas work.

The convertible lounge nicely doubles as an extra bed with the electronics in front alongside the seating area

The Thunder's electrical smarts, courtesy of the BM Pro, are complemented by solar panels on the roof, a Truma 14-litre hot water system with external shower head, and the indulgent overhead air conditioner – a lifesaver in extreme heat. (as we found out the hard way!)

I Luv It!

If you're seeking an extreme off-road adventurer, capable of tackling mud-caked terrain and water-logged bonnets, the Goldstream Thunder might not be the ideal choice. However, the Thunder is an excellent option for those seeking a strong, capable, comfortable, and versatile camper that's easy to set up and perfect for family adventures. Trust us, you'll be amazed at how far it will take you and the rough terrain it will conquer.

The tub is extra deep to accommodate all your gear and external features, standard
