Concept XTS 22' Club Review
Bear's Best Caravan Reviews
Heads certainly turned everywhere we trekked with the stunning Concept XTS 22’ Club caravan, especially as we rolled through lakeside Nagambie. This beautiful tourer has a sublime excellence with luxurious appeal yet tough demeanour. If you are a couple looking to do some extended travel and want to find one of those perfect campsites at the end of a rough dirt track, then get serious about an XTS from Melbourne’s Concept Caravans. Concept says, “The XTS sits at the peak of the Concept range. It blends luxury with durability and is fitted out with the best!”
Tough Travelling Companion
Every great construction starts with sturdy foundations. Hence, the XTS is built on a robust 6” Supergal chassis with an extended 6” drawbar and mesh rack from Preston Chassis. It has excellent off-road credentials with a tried and proven DO35 coupling out in front and AL-KO Enduro Cross Country independent trailing arm suspension to ensure your track will be smooth no matter how rough the surface. AL-KO ESC will keep your load in line even under difficult towing and stopping scenarios.
With a tare weight of 2840kg and a ball weight of 200kg, she’s no featherweight, but it is the complete home away from home with terrific construction and lots of creature comforts. She has AL-KO electric brakes on all wheels plus a Brakesafe breakaway safety system just in case. The ATM is 3340kg, so you will have to watch your payload a little with twin 95 litre water tanks, a 95 litre grey water tank, twin 9kg gas bottles and even the opportunity to house a generator on a slide in the large drawbar mounted tool box.
From The Ground Up!
The undersides are well presented and neat as a pin. The plumbing and electrical gear is well routed, and the water and grey tanks are set up high and fully shrouded from damage. There’s quite reasonable ground clearance from the independent suspension and 245/75R 16” all-terrain tyres on stylish Tallon Gloss alloy mags, and whilst it’s difficult to get terrific recovery angles in a 22’ caravan, I feel sure that she’s well equipped for some surprisingly rough tracks.
The external presentation is totally chic but certainly not gaudy. The grey, black, and white colour palette with black offsets and trim is modern and stylish but certainly not “in your face,” a level of sophistication that Concept always maintains. The 3mm silver external composite is exceptionally strong, and the smooth finish looks great with the stylish decals. The walls are meranti with foam and fibreglass insulation throughout.
There’s a great selection of Euro-style double-insulated windows, a Camec triple-locking door, a picnic table, a roll-out awning, gun metal checker plate protection, a tunnel and full-width front boot, an illuminated door handle, a good array of LED trailer and mood lighting, LED flood lighting front and rear, an external shower, and a reversing camera. The spare wheel is fitted to a strong rear bumper.
The Interior of the Concept XTS 22'
But the best is yet to unfold when you step in through the rear door, where the internal ambience beckons you to relax and enjoy. Let’s face it, there are loads of caravans with similar layouts, standard equipment, and accessories, yet I believe this XTS is a cut above most. Often, the little things like towel racks in the ensuite, premium surface finishes, pull-out footrests that are strong enough to stand on, and sensible storage alternatives make the subtle difference.
Add to that some glorious Tru-Matt gloss laminates, chic tapware, strong cabinetry fittings, thickly upholstered leather seating with beautiful stitching, and a host of other offerings, and you have a very attractive package.
A View of the Kitchen and Dining Areas
The size and layout make for a very comfortable home away from home for a touring couple with enough room for a dinner party or added bedding should the kids tag along by dropping the hydraulic leg on the table.
As Concept says, “You can escape the hustle and bustle to find your happy place in the bush.” With low power requirements, 2 x 170-watt solar panels, BMPRO charger/BMS, Odyssey touch panel with battery and tank level monitoring, and 2 x 120-amp AGM batteries as standard with lithium options, plus the twin gas bottles, you can keep all of life’s essentials running efficiently even when well off the grid.
Let’s have a little talk about practicality, shall we? With its 6'8 “(2030 mm) internal height, the XTS is an ideal van for tall travellers. It creates a feeling of spaciousness that combines well with the central Club lounge and kitchen layout, which features a truly inviting Queen bedroom up in front and a gorgeous ensuite to the rear.
The roof is insulated with fibreglass batts, and the walls with Styrofoam, which works well with the vast array of window and ventilation hatches. Plus, a class-leading Trauma Aventa reverse cycle air-conditioning with remote control and optional Sirocco fans(the Sirocco fans are removed; they are optional) keeps the climate comfy.
Concepts design, and CNC cut manufacturing have maximised the livability and storage. Up in front, the lush Queen bed is surrounded by a terrific array of very modern, gloss cabinetry that includes side nooks for all your bedtime knickknacks and charging requirements, bed head pockets, individual reading lights, overhead cabinets, wardrobes with dressing mirrors, bedside table and soft closing drawers. I must mention the window at the bedhead – in the right climate and conditions, they are priceless!
The extended leather Club lounge is simply terrific. It’s just the place to relax, eat, drink, or have the clan over for drinks or a meal. Opposite is a very complete kitchen with a recessed oven with electric hotplate, range hood, microwave, 4-burner cooktop (3 x gas, 1 x electric), overhead cabinets, plenty of bench space with stainless sink featuring stylish black tap wear and freshwater outlet, and some well-manufactured soft-close drawers.
The Club Lounge
Concept’s XTS features a terrific array of LED lighting throughout the van, including strip lights in the kitchen and overhead cabinets. There’s a large Dometic fan-cooled 3-way fridge/freezer in a raised cabinet for added ventilation and access, Bluetooth DVD/Radio, RV WiFi, and a 24” Smart LED television with internal and external outlets from the Wineguard HV TV antenna.
Best in Class Ensuite
The ensuite is up there with the Best in Class! Again, the spacious layout is very livable, plus it features a terrific array of sensible storage cabinetry, including a top-loading washing machine, China bowl toilet, touch-sensitive backlit mirror over vanity, a spacious, fully enclosed fibreglass shower to ceiling height and extractor fan hatches fitted over the toilet and shower. Hot water is supplied by a Truma ultra rapid stainless steel gas/electric hot water system, and as with the entire package, there’s a great array of power outlets.
Concept Caravans - Great Neighbours!
There’s a host of other fittings and accessories to explore in this wonderful Concept XTS, but it’s also worth mentioning that they have been the recipient of Hume City Council's Large Manufacturer of the Year in 2015 and were finalists again in 2016, reflecting their endorsement of the quality processes and systems. They have worked in close concert with the Hume City Council to increase their green footprint by implementing processes that maximise recycling of all products, introducing systems and processes, and installing solar systems at their manufacturing facility.
Their dedication to the community is reflected by support to the Australian Police Football Association (APFA), Community Crime Prevention Unit, Mental Health / Addiction Community Awareness (MACA), the NSW Volunteer Fire Fighters Association (VFFA), Paramedics Australasia and the Queensland Auxiliary Firefighter Association. Not only do Concept make terrific caravans – they’re great neighbours!
