Some brands are born from business plans. Signature Camper Trailers was born from a chance encounter. In 2019, Sean McDonald and his business partner Mark set out to buy a camper trailer. Instead, they bought the company.

What began as a small outfit building compact forward-fold campers has since grown into a full-scale brand, now producing everything from light expedition trailers to 18-foot off-road caravans for families.

Under McDonald’s leadership, Signature has evolved in both size and sophistication. As the market shifted toward larger, more capable rigs, the lineup expanded to include hybrids and full-size caravans.

The Omaroo Family is a prime example: an 18-foot, dual-axle van that sleeps up to seven with a king bed and triple bunks, all while staying under three tonnes unladen. But one of Signature’s biggest leaps is its 48-volt electrical system.

While most of the industry still leans on 12-volt setups, Signature integrates 15kWh of onboard battery capacity with 1kW of solar. That’s enough to run air conditioning and appliances off-grid for days.

McDonald believes this tech will become the new standard within a few years, and Signature is already there. While chassis and bodywork are imported, Signature insists on premium Australian components throughout.

Redarc, Enerdrive, Tough Dog, Webasto; these names form the backbone of the brand’s reliability promise. The benefit for owners is clear: if something goes wrong, support is local, fast, and backed by trusted suppliers.

Durability and usability aren’t just buzzwords at Signature either. Every model is field-tested, refined, and built with touring in mind. The Kakadu range, spanning 13, 16, and soon 18-foot layouts, uses honeycomb sandwich-panel construction to cut weight while maintaining rigidity.

Paired with Tough Dog or CruiseMaster suspension, they’re built to handle serious off-road punishment. Each van goes through multiple inspection stages too, with mechanics, auto-electricians, supervisors, and finally sales staff, checking everything before handover.

It’s a layered process designed to catch everything, backed by a five-year structural warranty and supplier guarantees. Accessible wiring, sturdy hardware, and easy serviceability reflect a focus on ownership in the real world, not just showroom polish too.

Signature’s presence at the CreditOne/OnlyVans Awards underlined its growing influence in the caravan scene. Looking ahead, the brand is expanding its national footprint, with a Western Australia showroom next on the list.

The future centres on refining its 48-volt tech across the range and pushing for smarter, lighter, and tougher builds. From a spontaneous purchase to a recognised off-road name, Signature Camper Trailers has grown with the same adventurous spirit as its customers.
