Bluewater Macquarie Review
I love working in the Australian RV industry; it is always full of new ideas and innovation. Our mammoth country challenges the adventurous with many elements, often all in one day!
Avid on- and off-road travellers need rugged and functional equipment to explore this wonderful land comfortably, and the dedicated and experienced crew at Bluewater Campers responds with exceptional products at exceptionally competitive prices.
The Bluewater Macquarie is a prime example of the popular forward-fold camper range. Bluewater engineers have tackled the concept head-on and redesigned the mousetrap to reveal a far easier-to-construct camper that incorporates a range of sensible features and accessories combined with experienced innovation.
To avoid confusion, the Blewater Macquarie began its history as the "Murray" after our iconic river; however, some other manufacturer claimed the name as their own. Hence, Bluewater went about its business professionally, welcoming the opportunity to introduce even greater innovations and producing a ripper of a forward-fold camper refined to perfection. Built on a sturdy galvanised chassis, this camper has all the features you'd want, with some innovative twists.
The premium Australian canvas is Dyna Proofed 14 oz, with YKK zips and fine mesh screens to keep the mozzies and other critters at bay. The tub's deep enough to stash all your gear, and the awning roof can stay attached for easy setup and pack-up.
The Macquarie Forward Fold Setup
Setting up the Macquarie is a breeze, thanks to the well-weighted gas struts and springs that allow the tent frame and canvas to pivot smoothly. You can even use the forward winch for a bit of extra assistance. The tent, complete with its tropical roof, pops open easily, thanks to some clever springs on the main bow, plus a pair of gas struts that get the rear bow into position. The innovative structure elevates the high-roofed tent without adjusting the internal hoop poles. Bluewater appropriately calls it the "Non-adjustable, spring-loaded, gas-strutted pole system" (I challenge you to say that a dozen times around the campfire!) If it looks like a windy night, you can add a couple of spreader bars for added security; otherwise, she's ready to roll for an overnighter. The tub is quite deep, allowing the tent to be easily packed with the full-length awning attached.
The Bluewater Macquarie's canvas construction is top-notch, providing a secure and waterproof environment that'll give you peace of mind. The attention to detail is impressive, with inner and outer awnings, sewn-in storage pockets, and cleverly concealed LED light strips and wiring.
The Macquarie's comprehensive packaging features a properly sealed cabin divider, draft skirts, and a spacious 2.4m-wide annexe with full enclosures. The annexe includes a large double ensuite tent that's integrated into a side wall, and can even be set up independently with additional poles and guide ropes.
The annexe area has been significantly expanded with a rear wall awning that extends from the trailer's lounge area, providing ample undercover protection for bikes, firewood, and other gear. The overall annexe dimensions are a generous 6 x 2.4m, making it a great space to relax and unwind. The ensuite is a highlight, with a separate wet and dry room, a divider screen, and a PVC floor. It's surprisingly livable, making it an excellent feature for camping trips.
The Trailer Build
The Bluewater Macquarie's specs are impressive, starting with a surprisingly low tare weight of 1500kg, and combining all of its impressive list of features. The GVM's been bumped up to 2400kg, thanks to Dexter 12" electric brakes and breakaways, allowing for larger loads. This makes it perfect for carrying twin stainless steel tanks with a combined 160L capacity, plus all your camping gear, recovery equipment, clothes, food, and drinks.
The Macquarie's build is very robust, with a full 75 x 50 x 3mm box-section subframe and independent trailing arm suspension. The suspension has been upgraded with locally supplied Lovell coil springs, dual Ridepro custom shock absorbers, and custom-made polyurethane bump stops. The Primal 16x8in alloy wheels and buyers' options of mud or AT 265/75 R16 tyres add to the Macquarie's rugged appeal.
Other notable features include strong Manutek stabiliser legs, an ARK X-Series 750kg-rated jockey wheel, Anderson plug, hand brake, and forward winch post. The A-frame drawbar has been thoughtfully designed, with plenty of space for twin 4kg gas bottles and jerry cans. The McHitch 3.5 tonne Uni-glide trailer coupling is a great touch, and the strong stone guard with replaceable mesh and huge toolbox are practical additions. The Macquarie has also been fitted with hot and cold-water fittings, a gas bayonet, and a Smartek 6 portable hot water system, making camping a breeze.
The Bluewater Macquarie's rear end has been redesigned with some clever features. The full-width pole compartment has a handy shelf divider for organising alloy poles, and the pivoting bumper is a great touch, retaining the spare wheel and a convenient toolbox for quick access to on-road essentials.
The underside is also well-designed, with twin-rated recovery points and a slide fitting for an optional push bike carrier. The recovery angle is good, so the trailer's bum won't drag in heavy undulations. The water tanks are fully shrouded for protection and fitted with sturdy bungs and fittings. One minor point worth noting is the water tank supply line – a solid elbow fitting would reduce the chance of the hose ripping from the tank fitting, especially in hot and remote destinations. However, Bluewater assured me that this will be fitted as standard in future models, which is great to hear.
The Bluewater Macquarie has yet another clever feature - the water tap on the rear underside with its two-way valve and pressure reducer, allowing you to connect to the mains supply in caravan parks or similar. This lets you bypass your water tanks altogether, which is super convenient. There's also an easy tank crossover valve to choose your desired water supply, giving you flexibility and control. Bluewater's chosen quality components, including a SeaFlo 42 series water pump and John Guest water lines and fittings throughout, should ensure longevity and reliable service. These little details make a big difference to the overall camping experience.
Driver Side Storage
The Macquarie's electrical system is well-organised, with twin 100AMP AGM batteries securely mounted in a lockable compartment at the rear. The electrical control panel is conveniently located just in front of the wheel arch. It features an isolator switch, analogue water tank indicators, voltage and rate of charge indicators, and a five-gang fused switch panel for controlling the fridge, pump, lights, and more.
The large front box offers ample storage, a spacious compartment and a separate locker with a large drawer and upper shelf. This locker is perfect for storing long poles like fishing rods, keeping them secure and ready for action. The storage has been thoughtfully designed to maximise space and keep gear organised.
Party Setup
The kerb side of the Bluewater Macquarie is where the fun begins. A massive fridge-slide up in front can handle a whopping 65kg load, making it perfect for larger portable coolers. The pressurised venting to the fridge compartment is a great touch, and all storage areas are carpet-lined with durable vinyl floors and feature sensor lights for added convenience.
Next to the fridge-slide is a second compartment with a pair of deep pantry drawers, providing vital storage for off-road adventures. The Macquarie's design makes carrying gear like kayaks easy, with loading and tie-down facilities on the camper's top. Just remember you'd need to lift the kayaks off each night to set up camp. The stairwell folds down and out of the way for easy entry and exit, and there's even a second doorway inside that could serve as a doggy door or a safety feature to keep little ones confined.
Outdoor Kitchen
Bluewater Macquarie's stainless steel kitchen is a real showstopper, sliding effortlessly out of the rear of the trailer to complete the living area. The clever "snake track" convoluted flexible hose support is a game-changer, eliminating the need to assemble power and water fittings every time the kitchen is slid out.
This kitchen is an absolute ripper. It features a Dometic 3-burner stove, three utility drawers for utensils and cutlery, tonnes of LED lighting, 12V and USB power outlets, and a slide-out prep bench. The full-length bar table hinges off the top, and the kitchen is supported with alloy legs for added stability. The fold-out dish rack is a thoughtful touch. Overall, this kitchen is a top-notch addition to the Macquarie, making meal prep and cooking a breeze while enjoying the great outdoors.
The Secrets Within
At first glance, the Bluewater Macquarie might seem like just another forward-fold camper trailer, but it's the little details that make it a home away from home. One of the standout features is the panoramic windows that bring the outdoors in, providing breathtaking views from every angle. But Bluewater hasn't forgotten about the little critters that might want to join you inside. The cabin divider is carefully sealed to keep them out, and hence the windows feature both inner and outer awnings, midge mesh screens, and high-quality YKK zips.
The sleeping compartment is designed for comfort, with a queen-size Australian-made inner spring mattress and a handy step to help you get in. The tent is surprisingly spacious, with a tall ceiling that creates a sense of volume and helps keep things cool in the heat.
The U-shaped convertible lounge has plenty of storage under the seats. It's also home to a Ctek 250SA DC-DC charger, perfect for charging late-model vehicles or via the 200-watt portable solar panels that come standard. If you need more electrical options, inverters and other upgrades are available on request.
As you step up into the Bluewater Macquarie, you'll notice the internal switch panel to your right, just inside the entry. This panel has been upgraded with soft-touch switches and a comprehensive multi-function control panel, featuring an MP3 player with Bluetooth and mass storage capabilities to keep you entertained.
There are plenty of power outlets throughout the camper, and you can even opt for 240-volt power if needed (though it wasn't included in our demo model). The internal upholstery has been upgraded with luxurious yet durable textures, adding to the overall comfort of the space. One of the best features is the central table, which drops down to create the base for a double bed, utilising the thickly padded cushions. The lounge area has been redesigned to be taller, creating a more inviting atmosphere, and the kitchen side can be fully unzipped for true open-plan living – perfect for relaxing and socialising with family and friends.
Our Verdict
Thanks to the Melbourne-based team at Bluewater Campers, what initially started as just another import has evolved into a premium-quality product. Their dedication to workmanship and service is earning respect from campers nationwide.
The Macquarie is a standout model, boasting unique yet practical features at a very reasonable price. Kudos to the Bluewater team for putting in the hard work and attention to detail to create a top-notch camper.
