The Austrack Savannah X is a real showstopper—it's got all the bells and whistles you'd want in a camper trailer, and then some. The premium presentation is on point, and the innovative rear slide is a game-changer. I mean, who wouldn't love the idea of having a huge amount of space to play with while still combining all of the wonderful features of the Savannah packaging?

I firmly believe the Austrack Savannah X to be one of the best value and highest quality campers in its class. The build quality is top-notch, starting with a sturdy galvanised chassis and great ground clearance thanks to the 16" alloy wheels and independent suspension. It really is a contender for serious bush travellers, not black top imitators, and when you arrive at that campsite at the end of a long road, it sets up quickly and provides a terrific array of creature comforts.

Forward Fold Rear Slide

Time and development have now eliminated some of the previous frustrations associated with assembly, particularly those associated with forward folding campers. Even with the added bonus of the rear slide that creates enormous facility and space, the Savannah X assembles easily. Fold down the gas strut-assisted tailgate that supports both the trailer lighting and twin spare wheels, and slide out the extenda unit that rides easily on its own tracks. The handy folding (150kg capacity) boat rack pivots easily, allowing the tent to pop up with its folding internal frame, and tensions up with little effort.

Built Tough Underneath

The Austrack Savannah X rides on a backbone of 100 x 50 x 3mm box steel frame with an A-frame drawbar of 120 x 50 x 4 mm drawbar. It features pretty good entry and recovery angles created by the independent trailing arm suspension. It features twin gas shockers and coil springs, chain extension retainers, six stub hub pattern, heavy duty bearings and attractive 16" alloy wheels with All Terrain, or optional mud tyres as standard. Twelve-inch electric brakes stop on command, and the handbrake secures the position. There are standard electrical connectors, an Anderson plug connection, an Ark XO swinging, and a height-adjustable jockey wheel. The towing coupling is the ever-popular McHitch.

Austrack has shown its credentials by fitting a full-width aluminium checker plate stone guard to the drawbar. Behind it, safe and secure, are twin Jerry can mounts and twin 4-9kg adjustable gas bottle retainers with dual hose regulator.

Underneath are twin recovery points, plus the wind-down stabilisers and twin stainless steel water tanks. The main 120l tank is positioned to the rear, servicing the kitchen, and the smaller 50l tank is forward, with outlets to the drawbar servicing a detachable ensuite. Both are well-shrouded and plumbed; however, I would prefer solid piping to the rear, replacing the flexible hose, to reduce the possibility of being grabbed by that inevitable, awkward log on the track.

Polished Finish and Thoughtful Details

The Savannah X's presentation is superb, with high-quality bronze, baked enamel coatings, and classy polished stainless steel trims, all accentuated by very appealing decals. It not only looks terrific but is smooth to the touch, with care given to the manufactured finish, eliminating sharp edges. This extends to the premium seals, locks, and hatches.

Entry is easy, with a hinged door exposing the cantilevered staircase. To the left, we find a large pantry complete with a very handy pole carrier and a couple of very large drawers for all your cooking gear and non-perishable foods. At the front, Austrack has supplied a large, fully vented fridge compartment complete with slides and a 75-litre EvaKool dual-zone fridge freezer as standard equipment.

Right of the stairwell is a further compartment with a ripper pull-out stainless steel kitchen featuring pressurised cold water to the large sink, 3 x utility drawers, a 3-burner Smev stove, plenty of bench space with a stabilised sliding extension, quick-connect fittings, and a folding shelf/drain unit. The gas system is fully plumbed and comes with an AGA gas certification certificate.

The driver's side has twin lockable water fillers and a well-thought-out electrical control centre with water tank gauges, voltmeter, ammeter, BMS, fuses and switches, isolating switch and a convenient charging instruction sticker for foolproof operation. Austrack have added a further Anderson plug input for a 160-watt standard solar panel aided by a 240-volt input with 20 20-AMP battery charger. Further forward, we have another large compartment, reflecting a pantry on the other side, with the pole retainer running full width. Right up front is yet another cavernous storage compartment that houses a porta-potty and fire extinguisher as standard equipment; however, it's also large enough to house a generator if preferred.

The Living Room

With its main tent area of 5200 x 1900 x 1600 plus the detachable awning area of 5200 x 2.4 metres complete with walls, floor and draft skirts, the Savannah X provides a vast, very comfortable living space. They use a high-quality 16 oz canvas for all the walls, roof and tent, as well as high-quality zips and midge-proof screens with awnings on all doors and windows. I reckon the unit resembles a mobile doughnut shop window when the awning to the dining area is completely opened, allowing the living area to be used for alfresco versatility.

As we enter the main tent via the staircase, the main Queen bed is to the left. The mattress is thick foam and comes complete with privacy screens as standard. The addition of the rear slide creates the facility for a further double bed at the rear, or should you prefer the added space of another Queen, you can extend by lowering the rear hinged seat.

The centre section features a six-seat convertible dinette with a portable table that can transform into yet another double bed if the whole tribe is staying over. Storage compartments under the box seating house twin 100AMP AGM batteries supplying the portable power to the Savannah X, including internal USB and 12-volt options. There is also low-energy lighting, including LED strips with individual switches.

The full-length annex dramatically extends the living space and is particularly handy by fully protecting the kitchen and outdoor living area. You can add the extra canvas walls as required or enclose the whole space for when the weather worsens. The annexe kit includes the private ensuite extension that extends out from the front of the annexe. It has a Country Comfort portable hot water system and a private area for the porta-potty. Again, all of this is standard equipment and offered at a very realistic price.

How Does It Travel?

The Austrack Savannah X has a very reasonable tare weight of 1440kg, with 120kg ball weight and allows a good volume of water, gas and load with its ATM of 2000kg, although I can see myself loading to limit with a boat up on top plus all the accessories. Whilst we didn't get the chance to climb a mountain or take an extended off-road sojourn, we did give it a good hike over some rocky water crossings, slopey moguls and sloppy slush, which it did with ease. It sat straight and true on the black top and shrugged its shoulders at corrugations.

The Austrack Savannah X is a very family-oriented camper trailer—for those with the spirit of adventure. At the same time, I like the idea of having plenty of room to spread out, even when travelling with a companion who needs a separate bed. When fully assembled, it has a huge footprint and exceptionally inviting, self-contained living facilities, plus plenty of essential power and water supplies for off-grid living.

For those who can't live without, the package even includes a TV/DVD/MP3 and sound system—but give me the old campfire bush TV and the sounds of nature any day!
