Adventure Campers

Adelaide's Adventure Campers say the best places to pitch a tent are often far from the highway — those quiet, hidden corners where few others dare to venture. They reckon you can have your cake and eat it out there too. Well, I'm pleased to hear that because I love getting far away from the maddening crowd in a remote campsite; and I love cake too!

With the Adventure Offroad Elite, you don’t just get the cake, you can bring the whole kitchen, plus your tinny on top, a mountain of gear, heaps of water, a comfy tent with a king-size bed, and all the little luxuries that make off-grid camping feel like home. The Offroad Elite is tough, functional, and well thought out. In fact, this serious off-road companion is built for long, arduous and remote travel.

Adventure proudly boasts that this model has the easiest kitchen access of any camper trailer, and I think they may be right. The roadside setup is brilliant. Half the roof lifts, the side panel folds down, and you suddenly have a fully equipped kitchen ready for action. Its features include a Lido Junior stainless steel two-burner stove with grill, loads of drawers for cutlery and crockery, a pantry, manual and electric water pumps, and enough bench space to host a bush banquet. There’s no sink, but honestly, a simple plastic tub for the washing up does the job just fine for me.

Every door, panel, and hatch is dust-sealed with automotive trim and compression locks. The 2.3-metre-long kitchen bench sits at waist height and is accessible in seconds. It's perfect for a roadside coffee or quick meal without unpacking half your rig. We also took along a portable Sovereign barbecue, as we had quite a tribe to feed!

Inside, LED lighting (including bug-resistant options), 12V and 240V outlets, and water and power gauges keep things civilised. Overhead, the retractable awning pulls out smoothly and connects back into the main tent when it’s all set up.

An ever-reliable 80-litre Waeco fridge/freezer handles cooling and food storage duties. It's tucked neatly behind a checker-plate stone guard on the drawbar and is quite easily accessible. The gas bottle sits conveniently alongside with a pivoting access/protective door so you can swap it out in seconds. Add in a dustproof storage box on the driver’s side, a heavy-duty jockey wheel, and a Treg hitch up front, and it’s clear this rig is made for serious travel while retaining reasonable reversing clearance.

Over on the driver’s side is a cavernous storage bay. It's long, wide, and again, properly sealed against dust invasion. Adventure says it offers more waist-level storage than any camper on the market, and I’m not about to argue. Open the top and side hatches, and you will see over 1100 litres of bright, LED-lit space, which means no crawling around on my old, bad knees to find my gear. The bed and tent slide neatly out from the rear, leaving the roof free for a dinghy or bulky gear that doesn’t need to be unpacked for an overnighter on the road.

Once you've mastered the bed and tent assembly routine, which took us a little while, you realise that the design is quite clever. The rear bumper and spare wheel fold down with the tailgate, then the double-sealed bedcase slides out on a sturdy frame. The bed platform pivots ninety degrees and locks before the tent unfolds to the passenger side. It’s a solid setup, although ideally, a two-person job, but the end result is a spacious 2150mm x 2300mm sleeping area with a proper king-size bed.

The canvas quality is excellent, with twin doors, four large windows, and fine insect-proof mesh. Extra rooms can be added if needed. Inside, you’ll find handy pockets, vents, 12V power outlets, hooks for lights, and a durable sewn-in floor. Best of all, you can leave most of your bedding in place when packing up, and with a standard bed height, there’s no midnight ladder climbing (thank God - my knees again thank you Adventure!)

There is enough room in the tent for a couple, plus one or two stretchers; although it would be a bit crowded with two. A mobile bunk would be a better alternative, particularly if you have kids. Enjoying the luxury of a spacious king-size bed is a real bonus. A restful night’s sleep is the perfect foundation for an unforgettable getaway.

Camper Trailer with Solid Foundations

This ingenious camper has a strong off-road chassis. Its frame and drawbar are made from powder-coated RHS steel. The Elite features heavy-duty, nine-leaf eye-to-eye springs with shock absorbers supporting the 1,500 kg, 50mm square solid beam axle. Ten-inch electric brakes and 16-inch Mickey Thompson off-road tyres complete this Trojan.

To be honest, I was quite pleased to see the leaf spring construction. We often get carried away with some independent suspension designs, and the leaf spring system couldn't be simpler, nor easier to maintain and repair. I have done many thousands of hard miles on such suspension with barely a fault.

Adventure campers will colour-match the powder-coated zinc anneal panels to match your tow vehicle and supply a long list of optional equipment, including an alternate stud pattern, hot water system, electrical accessories, and much more. That is the advantage of dealing with a proud local Australian company.

We took the Adventure Elite for a tour around beautiful East Gippsland and out onto the beach at Shallow Inlet. She towed beautifully for the entire trip and walked over the soft sand with a well-balanced weight distribution. The large kitchen area made catering for the crew a dream, and the Offroad Elite provided plenty of cover from the intermittent rain squalls in our Bears Gully hideaway in the dunes.

Adventure Campers run a sizeable hire fleet, which really helps with product testing for both hirers and hirees.  After three years of hire abuse, they sell their used trailers for around 80% of their replacement value. That is a real tribute to any product, let alone one dedicated to the rigours of the Australian outback.
